Suuns have premiered a new video for 'Sunspot' today, ahead of their return to the UK and Europe for a string of tour dates in September and October. Starting with Liverpool Psych Fest on 26th September, they go on to play London's Village Underground 29th September before taking their visceral live show through Europe and beyond to Turkey. Full details of all upcoming shows and tickets are below.
Directed by Suuns' frontman Ben Shemie, the 'Sunspot' video is more of a 30 minute short film exploring themes of repetition and absolution of sin. Ben explains further the ideas and inspirations behind the video:
"This video is based around hands. Dirtying ones hands, blood on the hands, and cleansing ones hands of sin are the themes that drive the imagery in this video. I saw Richard Serra's'Hand Catching Lead' video at the Metropolitan museum in NY a few years ago. Despite all the monumental works, this small raw video stuck with me the most. Something about the simplicity about looking at the artist's own hands, the realness was very intense. It is Serra's work that provides the visual inspiration behind this video.
"The compulsion of washing ones hands - absolution of sin - is very powerful. This compulsive behavior, regardless of the context, can relate to all of us. This one-take sequence that closes the video is not only physically demanding, but also very challenging to the viewer. Repetition, the common thread of the droney nature of Suuns' music, plays tricks on our sense of time and drives the fanatical and compulsive themes of the video to the edge of our tolerance."
Montreal's Suuns spent the winter and spring of 2012 writing and recording 'Images du Futur'. Their sessions were concurrent with the Quebec student protests that started in February of 2012 and continued through September of 2013. Set against a backdrop Ben Shemie calls "a climate of excitement, hope and frustration," Suuns aimed for an expansion of the musical ideas on their critically acclaimed 2010 debut LP, 'Zeroes QC'. Later in 2013, Turbo Recordings released a small collection of Images du Futur remixes from Clouds, It's A Fine Line, joeFarr, and Ivan Smagghe.
In the space between these releases the band has embarked on several tours in nearly all corners of the world, each member honing his individual craft, in turn greatly deepening their live performances. And seeing Suuns live is a physical experience; an audience alive and exposed to the electric, artistic chemistry so deftly delivered on record.
