There may be precious little evidence that consumers are interested in watching more than a few minutes of video at a time on their mobile phones, but Verizon Wireless apparently feels that live sports could change their viewing habits. On Tuesday it was announced that the communications company will pay $1 billion over four years for the rights to all regular NFL games on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays this season as well as postseason games, including the Super Bowl beginning early next year. (Blackout provisions apply.) Sports Business Daily observed that The Deal applies only to mobile-phone use and does not include tablets (like the iPad). That restriction, the publication noted, is certain to lead to fights over what is considered a phone, inasmuch as some mobile phones, such as Samsung's Galaxy, are nearly as big as some smaller tablets.
