Legendary rock'n'roll recording Mecca Sun Studios has become the first such place in America to be granted a NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK - just one day after founder Sam Phillips died.

The Memphis, Tennessee building was honoured yesterday (31JUL03), and is the birthplace of SUN RECORDS - the record label which launched the career of Elvis Presley, Bb King, CARL PERKINS, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash.

By tragic coincidence, 80-year-old Phillips died on Wednesday (30JUL03).

At the induction ceremony, SENATE MAJORITY LEADER BILL FIRST said, "By designating Sun Studio as a National Historic Landmark, we also pay tribute to Sam Phillips and his musical legacy."

"Sam is often credited with the invention of rock 'n' roll."
