Guitarist BERNARD BUTLER hated his band Suede during the 1990s, because the attention they attracted focused on their off-stage antics rather than their music.

Butler, now reunited with former Suede frontman Brett Anderson in new group The Tears, was so disturbed and embarrassed by the drug-fuelled tensions within the band, he walked away at the height of their success in 1994.

He recalls, "Every band hated you because you were getting all this attention.

"Frankly I hated us as well because the focus wasn't on the music. It was on all this stuff that I didn't understand.

"I just found it embarrassing to be honest."
