Stevie Wonder fought back tears as he accepted the Grammy Awards telecast's first award at the Staples Center in Los Angeles yesterday (11FEB07) - as he remembered his late mother. The soul superstar claimed the night's Best Pop Collaboration With Vocal for his revamped duet with Tony Bennett on FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE and struggled to find words to pay tribute to his mum. He had to be helped with his acceptance speech by Bennett onstage, after he croaked, "I have to accept this award in memory of my mother." The singer/songwriter's mother LULA MAE HARDAWAY passed away after an undisclosed illness last June (06). Bennett kept the acceptance speech in the family, by calling his son DANNY "the best manager in the world." Bennett and Wonder's For Once In My Life also picked up the Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists Grammy honour for JORGE CALANDRELLI.
