Steven Spielberg's critically-acclaimed new movie War Horse has seen off competition from BAFTA-nominated The Iron Lady and galloped to the top of the U.K. box office chart.
The film took the top spot with earnings of $6.2 million (£3.9 million) to put it ahead of another awards season contender, Meryl Streep's biopic of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, which came in second with $2.4 million (£1.5 million).
Streep's film, which won her a Golden Globe award on Sunday (15Jan12) and a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) award nomination on Tuesday (17Jan12), came in ahead of Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows ($2.2 million/£1.4 million) at three.
The top five is rounded out by Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol ($2.19 million/£1.37 million) and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo ($1.7 million/£1.05 million).
