Composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim is to be presented with one of America's top arts honours for his career achievements next month (Nov11).
The musical legend will receive the Handel Medallion at the Alice Tully Hall in New York on 1 November (11). The award is the highest prize given by the City of New York to contributors of the Big Apple's intellectual and cultural life.
The honour was last awarded to sopranos Licia Albanese and Roberta Peters in 2002, and other recipients include John Lennon, Lena Horne and composer Leonard Bernstein.
Sondheim's hits include West Side Story, A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd.
