Patterson, whose new book revolves around an obsessed fan hunting thriller and mystery writer King, scrapped plans for a November (16) release after learning the Misery author really was a target of over-zealous fans, who had "disrupted" his private life.

Announcing the news in a statement via his publisher on Thursday (22Sep16), Patterson writes: "My book is a positive portrayal of a fictional character, and, spoiler alert, the main character is not actually murdered.

"Nevertheless, I do not want to cause Stephen King or his family any discomfort. Out of respect for them, I have decided not to publish The Murder of Stephen King."

King and Patterson have never met and they are far from close - in 2009, King called Patterson a successful yet "terrible" writer.

James Patterson will release Taking the Titanic instead of the planned King book.
