Following an unscheduled break from filming last week, Stephen Colbert is back on air with his show The Colbert Report. The Comedy Central show, which is a spin-off from The Daily Show, had its filming schedule interrupted last week, admits speculation that Colbert was tending to his 91 year-old mother.

According to E! Online, Colbert denied many of the rumours that had been associated with his temporary leave of absence from the show. These reportedly included rumours that he had been shut down by the FCC and that he was recovering from a plastic surgery procedure. He then made an oblique reference to his mother, saying "Oh, one more thing. Evidently having 11 children makes you tough as nails. Confidential to a lovely lady." This would certainly support the theory that he had been away supporting his poorly mother who has, indeed, had 11 children. Before the show, Stephen Colbert had posted a message on his Twitter feed, saying "My family and I would like to thank everyone who has offered their thoughts and prayers. We are grateful and touched by your concern."

Stephen Colbert is known to be very close to his mother. In 1974, his father and two of his siblings died in a plane crash. After resorting to airing repeat episodes of The Colbert Report, Comedy Central have now announced that new episodes of the show were expected to be aired all of this week.
