U.S. TV comedian Stephen Colbert appears to have confirmed reports suggesting his mother's ill health was to blame for halting production on his nightly political affairs programme last week (ends19Feb12).
Filming on The Colbert Report was suspended last Wednesday (15Feb12) due to "unforeseen circumstances", amid rumours the funnyman had to tend to a mystery family emergency.
Colbert returned to work on the Comedy Central network show on Monday (20Feb12) and addressed speculation surrounding his brief and unexpected hiatus, jokingly dismissing claims that he'd undergone plastic surgery and that his show had been cancelled by U.S. government officials.
Instead, Colbert, the youngest of 11 kids, hinted that reports about his 91-year-old mother Lorna's ailing health were true, although she is now said to be on the road to recovery.
He said, "Evidently, having 11 children makes you tough as nails. Confidential to a lovely lady."
