Actor Stephen Baldwin has avoided jail by making his final payment of $100,000 (£62,500) to U.S. authorities to clear his tax debt.
The Usual Suspects star was arrested for tax evasion in December, 2012 amid claims he owed an estimated $400,000 (£250,000) in back taxes, penalties and interest to New York state officials for the years 2008, 2009, and 2010.
He struck a plea deal with prosecutors which saw him plead guilty to the felony last year (13) and gave him the chance to have his record wiped clean if he settled his debt in full by the end of this month (Apr14) and stayed out of trouble for the next three years.
Baldwin and his lawyer Russell Yankwitt appeared in a Rockland County court in New York on Friday (11Apr14) and revealed that he had paid off the last of the outstanding bill on Thursday (10Apr14), thanks to a loan from an unidentified friend.
Speaking after the hearing, Baldwin admitted he was glad to finally be rid of his tax woes, saying, "I'm looking forward to doing things the right way in the future."
