Fashion designer Stella Mccartney's wedding to publisher ALASDHAIR WILLIS yesterday (30AUG03) saw several of their famous guests take to the waves in order to reach the ceremony.

Stella and her beau wed on the small Scottish Isle of Bute, but celebrity pals including superstar Madonna, her husband Guy Ritchie, actress Liv Tyler and pop legend Sting were transferred from their luxury coach into the ferry's bar on Friday (29AUG03) - because the bus was too big for the vessel.

While MATERIAL GIRL singer Madonna was uneasy about mixing with locals at the ferry terminal, her film director husband was happy to escort their children LOURDES and ROCCO as they took a look around.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and his lover Gwyneth Paltrow were also content to mix with the other travellers at the terminal.

Supermodel KATE MOSS simply told bemused onlookers, "Yes, I am here for the wedding but it's all top secret so I can't say much about it."

The father of the bride, former BEATLE sensation Sir Paul McCartney, and pregnant wife Heather Mills, arrived in a much more civilised way - his personal helicopter took him straight to the wedding's venue, the 19th century Mount Stuart House.

However, other members of the McCartney clan were transported over to Bute in a small ferry chartered by Stella to take them from their home on the Mull of Kintyre to the wedding.

In order to calm his nerves before making his vows, husband-to-be Alasdhair enjoyed a relaxing day on Friday sailing his $9.6 million (GBP6 million) yacht THE DRUM, which was famously capsized in 1985 by its former owner - Duran Duran frontman Simon Le Bon.

Le Bon sent a message to the publisher saying, "Good luck Alasdhair. I honestly hope The Drum brings you better luck than it did me."
