Fashion guru Stella Mccartney is being lined up for the highly-coveted top job at Italian design house GUCCI.
Sir Paul McCartney's daughter is the front-runner for the role of creative director, which was recently vacated by American style star Tom Ford, who left after disagreements about money and artistic control.
The appointment is a controversial one - Stella has come under fire recently after it was revealed her eponymous clothing line had lost millions of pounds in its first two years and was relying on handouts from Gucci, its parent company.
Her work was also attacked by British design legend Jeff Banks, who slammed her "amateurish" clothes and insisted she'd be nowhere without her famous father.
But the company is undaunted, and feels Stella would be perfect for the position.
A fashion source says, "The position will not become free until April (04), but it has been decided that Stella is going to take over. Inevitably there will be resentment that she won the role - a lot of people had their hearts set on it."05/01/2004 18:38
