Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, starring Harrison Ford, opened in Britain on Thursday (17Dec15) and immediately made its mark, taking $14.4 million (£9.6 million) on its first day.

Now the newly-released weekend box office figures, covering attendance ticket sales until the close of business on Sunday (20Dec15), show the sci-fi sequel took $51 million in that four-day period, thrashing the competition.

Earlier this year (15), Bond movie Spectre set a new record with $62 million (£41.3 million) over its first six days of release, but the Star Wars movie is on course to crush that figure.

In second place on the U.K. weekend box office chart (18-21Dec15) is newly-released comedy Sisters, which took $1.8 million (£1.2 million), and animated movie The Good Dinosaur is in third with $1.3 million (£890,000).

The top five is rounded out by Bollywood movie Dilwale, with $1.09 million (£727,000), and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, with $787,500 (£525,000).
