Director Spike Lee has turned to crowdsourcing website in a bid to raise enough money to fund his next movie.

The director is appealing to generous fans to help him reach his target of $1.25 million (£806,450) by 21 August (13) in order to foot the cost of his upcoming project.

In a message to potential investors, Lee admits it is growing increasingly difficult to get independent films made because Hollywood executives are only interested in big budget action and sci-fi movies.

He writes, "With the current climate in The Hollywood Studio System it's not an encouraging look for Independent Filmmakers. I'm not hating, just stating the facts. Super Heroes, Comic Books, 3D Special Efx, Blowing up the Planet Nine Times and Fly through the Air while Transforming is not my Thang (thing) (sic)."

Instead, Lee is hoping devotees will be willing to dig deep to help fund the project themselves - although he has shared few details about the film, simply revealing it is about "the addiction of blood".

He adds, "Film making is what I do, film making is what I love. You guys, help me keep it going because this is a mother f**king tough business."

Lee, who will not be taking a fee for the movie, is offering up a variety of rewards to encourage fans to get involved. Contributors who donate $5 (£3.23) to the project will receive a tweet of thanks and project updates from the famous director, while those who give $10,000 (£6,452) will get to have dinner with Lee and join him courtside at a New York Knicks basketball game.
