Union bosses have begun an investigation into Broadway's new Spider-Man musical after actress Natalie Mendoza was injured during a performance.
Mendoza, who plays villainous spider-woman Arachne, has pulled out of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark after reportedly suffering a concussion when a weighted rope struck her on the head during a preview performance in New York last month (Nov10).
Now Maria Somma, a spokesperson for the Actors' Equity Association (AEA), confirms officials are looking into the accident, telling Newsday.com, "We are doing due diligence."
Somma also reveals representatives for the AEA "have been at every rehearsal and performance" of the production to oversee the safety of performers.
The superhero spectacular, which is due to officially open next month (Jan11), has struggled through a variety of problems in the run-up to its launch including several on-set injuries - one actor broke both wrists during a rehearsal, while another injured his foot.
