The final installment of Star Wars series grossed $158.5 million during its first weekend of release in North America - the biggest three-day opening of all time.

The record was previously held by Spider-Man, which opened to almost $115 million in 2002.

STAR WARS: EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH raked in $50 million (GBP26.3 million) in its first 24 hours of release in the US and Canada, with $16.5 million (GBP8.6 million) in ticket sales coming from Thursday's (19MAY05) sold-out debut midnight showings.

Last weekend's box office champ, Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda's Monster-In-Law, slipped to a distant second with $14.4 million (GBP7.5 million), while the WILL FERRELL soccer comedy KICKING + SCREAMING took in $10.5 million (GBP5.5 million).

CRASH and UNLEASHED round out the top five with $5.5 million (GBP2.8 million) and $3.8 million (GBP2 million) respectively.
