The organisers of Broadway's Spider-Man musical were thrown into a spin over the weekend (14-15Jul12) by a bomb scare shortly before First Lady Michelle Obama was due to watch the show with her children.
Officers from America's Secret Service were stationed at Manhattan's Foxwoods Theatre ahead of the arrival of President Barack Obama's wife and they were put on high alert after an audience member cracked a joke about planning to "blow up" the venue "if the show is no good", according to the New York Daily News.
The theatre-goer, identified as Ross Mandell, 43, from Charlotte, North Carolina, was detained and searched, but was later released without arrest. Members of the New York Police Department and the Secret Service ordered the Obama family's motorcade to slow down to allow them more time to thoroughly search the theatre before their arrival.
The show later went on as planned.
