Sparta frontman Fred Ward was left speechless at the Coachella FESTIVAL this weekend (01MAY04) - when he finally saw his idols The Pixies perform.

The rocker was just 12 when the group released classic album DOOLITTLE in 1989, and they had split before he was old enough to see them perform live.

But after his cult group performed on the same bill as the rock legends at the festival in the California desert, he stuck around to watch the reunion show - and was blown away by their performance.

He said before the set, "When I was 12-years-old, I got a cassette of Doolittle by the Pixies. It was the first album I learned in its entirety.

"If someone told me 15 years ago I'd be right here right now, I wouldn't have believed them. This is going to be one of the best days of my life."

The Pixies 75-minute show was a true highlight for many fans the four-piece ripped into a blistering set of classics including BONE MACHINE, MONKEY GONE TO HEAVEN, NIMROD'S SON and VELOURIA.

Other highlights included Kraftwerk and Radiohead's headlining shows on Saturday night (01MAY04) and The Cure's show on Sunday (02MAY04).
