Solange Knowles was "isolated" while raising her son in Idaho as a teenager.
The singer gave birth to little Juelz, now 12, in 2004, when she was just 17, and married his father, Daniel Smith, who was studying in Moscow, Idaho.
Solange agreed to move in with Daniel so he could continue his studies, and now admits that while she enjoyed spending time alone with her newborn son, she was terribly lonely living away from her friends and family.
"It was one of the most bittersweet moments of my life because I was so in love with Julez, and having spent a lot of time on the road, I yearned to be in one place, to have the opportunity to really ground myself with him," she tells Elle magazine. "But it was isolating and lonely, and so cold and dark. And it was just Julez and me most of the time. It was hard to imagine being able to progress in my career in any way."
Beyonce's sister divorced Smith in 2007 and is now married to producer Alan Ferguson.
