Actress Sofia Vergara flew into a panic after learning about the Boston Marathon bombings on Monday (15Apr13) because the Modern Family star's son attends college in the city.

Three people were killed and over 100 injured when two bombs exploded near the finish line of the annual race, sending the city into chaos amid fears the blasts were part of a massive terrorist plot.

Vergara was in New Orleans, Louisiana filming new movie Heat when she heard about the tragedy, and she admits her thoughts immediately turned to her 21-year-old son Manolo, who studies at Emerson College in Boston.

During an appearance on U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America on Wednesday (17Apr13), she said, "I think I felt the same way that everybody in this country felt. It's disbelief, like... why? Why is this happening?

"I was very fortunate that my son that day had come on the train to New York to visit his girlfriend. I was shooting in New Orleans, so I immediately went crazy and immediately he texted me - he knows that I can get crazy. So he was like, 'Mum, I'm still in New York'. But it's unbelievable, it's heartbreaking, it's so much unnecessary pain. Hopefully they (the people of Boston) can overcome this horrible thing."
