Former Smashing Pumpkins rocker Billy Corgan is finally opening himself up to fans after years of trying to work out his own identity.

Corgan, who took out a full-page advert in the Chicago Tribune newspaper last month (JUN05) asking his Pumpkins bandmates to consider a reunion, is relieved he's finally behaving without pretense.

He says, "If I look back at my life, the thing that is most painful to me is that I haven't been myself.

"If anyone had looked at me, scratched their head and wondered, 'What the f**k is he on about?', they should view what I've said in the context of someone who wants to be himself, but hasn't been able to.

"I wasn't able to say, 'Yeah, this is f**king me - f**k you.' I had to play at being characters. So now I'm at a point in my life where if ever I have to get things right, it's now."
