American rockers Slipknot have taken legal action to shut down a new Burger King marketing campaign that they believe mimics their mask-wearing stage attire.

The Grammy-nominated band are threatening a trademark infringement lawsuit against the food chain's executives and their advertising agency over a series of US TV ads.

The commercials feature fictional group COQ ROQ, who wear decking masks that Slipknot claim resembles their famous stage costumes.

Slipknot attorney HOWARD WEITZMAN says, "It is obvious that the television advertising and website are designed to conjure up the image and persona of a live performance of Slipknot."

Weitzman adds that Coq Roq's costumes include "a gas mask as worn by Slipknot's SID WILSON, a kabuki-style mask as worn by Slipknot's JOEY JORDISON, and a mask with dreads as worn by Slipknot's Corey Taylor."

However, Burger King's legal representation says, "The Coq Roq band is a mock heavy metal band that is markedly and obviously different from Slipknot except for the generic fact that both play heavy metal music and wear masks."
