The celebrated Indian musician, father of singer Norah Jones, passed away at a hospital in San Diego, California after suffering breathing problems last week (endso9Dec12). He was 92.
Famous fans took to Twitter.com to mourn the loss of the celebrated musician, who Beatles legend George Harrison branded "the godfather of world music" after the pair struck up a friendship in the 1960s.
Slash wrote, "Sad day; spiritual, cultural & music legend, Ravi Shankar dead at 92. Rip."
Lang tweeted, "Ravi Shankar... May you have a swift and positive rebirth. Thanks for being a musical ambassador", and Perri added, "Rest in peace sweet ravi shankar. i hope you're making music again with george (Harrison)." The star then uploaded a snap of Shankar playing his beloved sitar.
British rockers Happy Mondays also added their own tribute, writing, "Sad day. Ravi Shankar prob (probably) one of the greatest musicians of all time has died. always loved his music", and The Charlatans singer Tim Burgess wrote, "The great Ravi Shankar has left the building. An amazing talent and the maker of a beautiful sound."
Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra also added a tribute, tweeting, "The end of an era in Music. We have lost too many legends this year... My condolences to the family. Rip."
