Sir Paul McCartney is so determined to protect England's heritage, he's agreed to sponsor The Conservation Awards for the next five years.

The former BEATLES singer, 62, has voiced support for the work of conservationists - and is supporting the eight-year-old initiative after meeting 2002 winner IAN CLARK, who restored the Royal Navy's first submarine HOLLAND 1.

McCartney explains, "People don't realise how lucky we are to have such brilliant conservation specialists in this country. I've seen them in action.

"The Conservation Awards draw attention to those wonderful skills, and I'm delighted to help ensure they continue."
