The Avatar star will be honoured with the Ally for Equality prize, which recognises "the outstanding efforts of those who dedicate time, energy, spirit and whole-hearted commitment to better the lives of LGBT people", according to officials at the civil rights group.

"Sigourney Weaver has been a valuable and outspoken ally to the LGBT community," says HRC President Chad Griffin in a statement issued to WENN. "Using her influence and global platform to bring attention to the challenges faced by our community, she is committed to advancing fairness and equality and improving the lives of LGBT people. We are grateful for her work, and proud to recognize her accomplishments with our Ally for Equality Award."

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo will also be celebrated at the 2016 Greater New York Gala for his support of the community and his efforts to champion LGBT causes while in office.

The ceremony, which will feature a performance from British singer/songwriter Jess Glynne, will take place in the Big Apple on 6 February (16).
