Shia LaBeouf 's method acting has come under some scrutiny in recent months, the one-time family favourite, after his roles in Even Stevens and his appearance in the Transformers franchise, surprising many following the decision to get his kit off for Icelandic band Sigur Ros' video for their track Fjogur Piano. He's gone to even crazier lengths since then, though, taking Lsd in order to accurately portray the trip of being on the drug for forthcoming film The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman , which comes out in January. The star also drank moonshine for his role in Lawless, of which the promotional trail is just about wrapping up, and will be appearing in Lars Von Trier's film Nymphomaniac, which allegedly requires the actors to have actual sex (though this has since been denied).
Has Labeouf gone too far? Certainly there are people like Michael Fassbender, who starved himself for the film Hunger, whilst Labeouf also looks up to famed method actors like Robert Redford and Sean Penn. "There's a way to do an acid trip like Harold and Kumar, and there's a way to be on acid," LaBeouf, 26, recently told Usa Today "What I know of acting, Sean Penn actually strapped up to that (electric) chair in Dead Man Walking. These are the guys that I look up to." You do wonder at how far Labeouf will go, though, and the damage that he'll do to his body. Method acting is something to be lauded, for sure, respect must go to those willing to go so far to their art. But the danger is that he could just end up alienating everybody.
One thing he won't be doing will be revealing his genitals in Nymphomanica, with Von Trier using body doubles. It sounds about the only thing that we won't be seen of him over the next months.
