Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur struggled with his direction in period movie ELIZABETH - because he hates history. Kapur only agreed to direct the 1998 movie and its sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age after he was pipped to directing Trainspotting by British moviemaker Danny Boyle. He says, "When they (the producers) first approached me it was odd because period drama doesn't attract me. I hated history and knew nothing about Elizabeth. "The British film that interested me at the time was Trainspotting. So when we started shooting, the joke was that this was the Trainspotting version of British costume drama."
