Soul Singer Sharon Jones Vows To Come Back Stronger Than Ever After Cancer Diagnosis

Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings

Singer and front-woman of the Dap-Kings Sharon Jones revealed this week that she has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumour growing on her bile duct. The singer has viewed the life-threatening disease in encouragingly positive fashion, with the singer revealing that the tumour was caught fast and she should be able to make a full recovery after the unexpected health scare.

The 57-year-old was due to release her fifth album with her band, titled Give the People What They Want, with a number of promo shows already planned before the release of the album, however the singer has had to post-pone both in order to undergo surgery immediately. A rep for the singer said that it may be some time before the singer will be back on stage and able to release the new album because of the "invasive and complex nature" of the surgery, which will in turn result in a "a rather lengthy convalescence," but recovery from the disease nonetheless.

"Over the last few weeks I haven't felt good and I didn't know what was going on," Jones herself explained in a statement released on the Dap-King's website on Monday (June 3), adding, "We just found out that I have a stage-one tumour on my bile duct. Luckily we caught it really early and fast and the doctors say it's operable and curable! I will be having surgery very soon and will have to rest and recover... I'll be staying in touch and I'm looking forward to getting back on the road to give the people what they want!"

Sharon Jones Vows To Return To The Stage Despite Cancer Diagnosis

Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings

Sharon Jones, the legendary soul-funk singer with the Dap-Kings, has postponed the release of her new album after she was diagnosed with bile duct cancer. According to statement circulated this week, Jones had planned to release Give The People What They Want on August 6, 2013, though scrapped the schedule due to Jones' surgery and recovery.

"Over the last few weeks I haven't felt good and I didn't know what was going on. We sadly had to cancel shows while I went through a series of tests and short hospital stays," Jones said in a statement. "We just found out that I have a stage-one tumor on my bile duct. Luckily we caught it really early and fast and the doctors say it's operable and curable!" There's currently no word on a revised release date for Jones' sixth album though the singer is eager to return to the stage as soon as possible. "I will be having surgery very soon and will have to rest and recover. I'll be staying in touch and keeping my fans and friends updated on my progress," Jones said. "I'm looking forward to getting back on the road to give the people what they want!"

Georgia-born New Yorker Jones is credited with reviving the soul-funk movement following its peak in the late 1960s to mid-1970s. The singer experienced breakthrough success late in her career, releasing her first record with the Dap Kings, Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones And The Dap-Kings, in 2002.
