Sex And The City creator Candace Bushnell is surprised people sometimes feel uncomfortable with her outrageous characters - because she insists they are all real.

The successful writer is convinced she has not taken her four leading ladies - played by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon in the TV show based on her books - too far, insisting she wishes she could take them even further.

Candace boasts, "It really did expose people and what they think about life, dating, sex, everything. We live in a world now that is very, very conservative and what is out there in books and movies and music is not very challenging - it is pretty narrow and shows very idealised views of people.

"Sex and The City rips that curtain away and says, 'This is what people are really like'. Actually that is what all of my books do. People are sometimes a little bit uncomfortable with the characters in my books but they are real, not a Hollywood-ised version of humanity."
