Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to return to U.S. television in the new drama series 'Ringer', which has been picked up by the CW network. Sarah Michelle Gellar will play the roles of identical twins in the forthcoming drama series, set to premiere in the fall, reports Entertainment Weekly.
The CW announced on Thursday (18th May 2011) that 'Ringer' will replace the outgoing 'Hellcats', with 'Smallville' and 'One Tree Hill' also wrapping up their nine and ten year runs respectively. Only three shows, 'America's Next Top Model', 'Supernatural' and 'The Vampire Diaries' will keep their current time periods on the CW's schedule. In 'Ringer', Gellar plays a woman who, having witnessed a murder, goes on the run and hides out by living the life of her wealthy identical twin sister. She soon discovers that her sister's life is just as complicated and dangerous as the one she's left behind. The actress, who has been absent from television screens since 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', says she has enjoyed playing a refreshing new role, saying, "With Buffy, I got to do so much. So what do you do next? What do you do that an audience hasn't seen you do? But bringing to life two characters and making them different, but at the same time interesting, and showing the similarities is definitely a challenge I've never done".
Sarah Michelle Gellar's new show was originally scheduled to premiere on CBS, before being handed to sister network the CW. It has been reported that Gellar will not be involved in the planned 'Buffy' movie, nor will the series' original director JOSS WHEADON.
