Celebrity comedienne and singer Sandra Bernhard has lashed out at reality TV stars, insisting the antics of the fame-hungry are stealing airtime from more talented performers.
Bernhard "struck out" on her own as a teen to make a name for herself in Hollywood, and the 54 year old is outraged her hard work over four decades has been overshadowed by popular programmes following everyday people.
She rants, "I am completely against reality television. It's not about hate, it's just the idea that people like me and so many people... hone their craft. I think you're born with the DNA of wanting to be a performer.
"This is something I always wanted to do. I struck out when I was 18 years old. I started doing stand-up (comedy), I started singing. But I did it on my own. I don't believe that people who come from day-to-day life should be taking airtime from people who've worked so hard. It's important for the public to understand the difference between artists and people who create, and people who just step in."
