The Skyfall filmmaker's DreamWorks project, about Talese's encounter with a Colorado voyeur who built his own motel to spy on guests, was in the early stages of development, with the first draft of the script penned by Krysty Wilson-Cairns.

However, he and producer Steven Spielberg have since decided to scrap the film completely after documentary-makers Myles Kane and Josh Koury shot a feature on Talese and hotel owner Gerald Foos - without Mendes' knowledge.

"Nobody told us about (the documentary)," Mendes told Deadline.com. "Nobody told DreamWorks, nobody told me. It was going on all that time; they had been making the documentary for at least a year before the publication of the book, which is one of the reasons it's such a strong piece of work. But nobody ever told us, simple as that, which clearly is frustrating..."
