The family's holiday got off to a bumpy start when the actor tried to check in their devices, believed to be hands-free Segways, but the airline they were flying with has banned the gadgets due to safety concerns.

After Crowe was told he would not be able to bring the 'hoverboards' on the plane, the Gladiator star decided against flying and ranted about the incident in a series of posts on

"Ridiculous... No Segway boards as luggage? Too late to tell us at airport. Kids and I offloaded..." he writes. "Why not tell me when I am booking my ticket?... I'm a father... with two kids at an airport , trying to start our holiday."

The boards have been banned by a number of major airlines amid concerns their lithium ion batteries could be a fire risk.
