Campaigning funnyman Russell Brand joined protesters in London on Monday (01Dec14) as part of a campaign to save residents of a housing estate.

Almost 100 families living on the New Era Estate in east London face the prospect of eviction after the buildings were purchased by bosses of a U.S. company, who plan to refurbish the apartments and rent them out at full market value.

A petition urging the government to step in and block the move has attracted 300,000 signatures, and Brand joined demonstrators on Monday to deliver the document to Prime Minister David Cameron's home in Downing Street.

In a post on Twitter.com, the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star rallied support by writing, "Join us - 12.30 Berkley Square at #WestCrook offices to deliver 300,000 signatures to Downing St on behalf of #NewEraEstate."
