British actor/comedian Russell Brand is urging his fans to support firefighters in the U.K. as they face swingeing budget cuts.

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star gave a speech at the Ring of Fire anti-austerity event in London on Friday (26Sep14) calling on the public to show their backing for members of the U.K.'s Fire Brigades Union (Fbu).

The event was part of the Fbu's nationwide tour to raise awareness of the effects the government budget cuts will have on firefighting services.

Sitting on top of a fire truck, Brand told the rally, "My mate from school grew up to be a fire fighter. Our fire service, like all public servants, they are being treated with contempt by our government and their incredibly difficult job is being made impossible.

"It's time for us to come together and support them before the public services our grandparents built goes up (sic) in flames."
