British comedian Russell Brand opened his hosting stint at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards on a serious note, urging Americans to vote for Barack Obama.
The funnyman nervously listed the performers at the VMAs and then launched into politics, asking the "people of America" to "please elect (presidential candidate) Barack Obama... on behalf of the world".
Brand added, "Some people, I think they're called racists, say America is not ready for a black president, but I know America to be a forward thinking country, right, because otherwise would you have let that retarded cowboy fella (President George W. Bush) be president for eight years.
"We thought it was nice of you to let him have a go because, in England, George Bush wouldn't be trusted with a pair of scissors."
In a bid to balance his political argument and acknowledge Obama and running mate Joe Biden's Republican opponents, John MCCain and Sarah Palin, Brand referred to Alaskan Governor Palinas a "V.I.L.F.," explaining the term meant, "Vice-President I'd like to... fumble, fondle."
Brand also poked fun at the teenage father of Palin's unborn granddaughter and the Jonas Brothers' safe sex message and Madonna during his often crude and awkward opening monologue.
