British actor Rupert Everett has backed Stephen Fry's campaign against the upcoming Winter Olympics in Russia, condemning the country's stance on gay rights issues.

The My Best Friend's Wedding star is outraged by the treatment of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (Lgbt) community in Russia, where the promotion of homosexuality is illegal, and he has thrown his support behind Fry's call to boycott the 2014 Games in Sochi.

Fry sparked international debate about staging the Games in Russia by writing an open letter to U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron earlier this month (Aug13) calling for a veto.

Speaking during the Edinburgh International Book Festival in Scotland, the actor insisted he "absolutely" agrees with Fry, adding, "It feels terrible to have to observe all this stuff going on (in Russia). If you are gay in Russia you don't know anything about anything. You have no idea Aids exists because there's no information. You live very secretly. If anyone finds out you are gay you are liable to be beaten up, or killed, or forced to commit suicide... The system there is very, very cruel. The situation with homosexuality is coming to a horrible head."
