Bollywood actor Romesh Sharma has been handed a life sentence for conspiracy to murder his fashion designer girlfriend. The 50-year-old and five accomplices - including his nephew Surinder Mishra - were convicted of plotting to kill 29-year-old Kunjum Budhiraja almost nine years ago (99). Special Prosecutor S.K. Saxena had demanded the death penalty to all of the accused, but the judge turned the request down. In a 175-page judgment, Sessions Judge S. P. Garg cited circumstantial evidence as the vital reason for convicting the actor. He said in his order, "I have gone through the contents of all the letters written by Kunjum and found that she was having love and affection for Sharma." He further stated the contents of all those letters supported the prosecution in establishing the relationship between the designer and Sharma. Sharma has been in judicial custody since 1999 and is facing trial in up to 16 other criminal cases.
