The Rolling Stones kicked off the new American football season in style last night (08SEP05) by performing live in Detroit, Michigan - the prospective home of the 40th Super Bowl in February (06).

Wearing a red satin coat and matching top hat, Mick Jagger began the celebration with their hit START ME UP as footage of football heroes flashed up on a massive screen behind him.

Jagger told fans, "It's great to be here in Detroit, at the home of Super Bowl 40. It's going to be a great football season." The British supergroup also performed new track ROUGH JUSTICE.

And unpredictable Black Sabbath rocker Ozzy Osbourne thrilled fans with a surprise performance at the Gillette Stadium, Massachusetts.

The bi-coastal launch party, hosted by actor Freddie Prinze Jr, also featured Kanye West and MAROON 5's Adam Levine duetting at Los Angeles' Coliseum and Green Day, who performed at Gillette Stadium, just before the kick-off between Super Bowl champions New England Patriots and Oakland Raiders.
