Former PINK FLOYD star Roger Waters has received mixed reviews for his new opera CA IRA (THERE IS HOPE), which premiered in Rome, Italy, on Thursday (17NOV05).
The COMFORTABLY NUMB rocker, who received a standing ovation at the city's Music Auditorium following the performance, had been dreading the Italian media's critical response to his new direction.
Speaking in September (05), he said, "The knives are bound to come out. People defend their own little islands of culture with great panache."
Waters effort was criticised, but it didn't receive the slating he had been expecting.
One critic at newspaper La Repubblica described the opera as "eclectic" but did add, "Waters is not so much (GUISEPPE) VERDI or (GIACOMO) PUCCINI, more Andrew Lloyd Webber...
"(The opera) was like an elephant trying to take to the air with a small pair of wings."
