LATEST: Rod Stewart caused havoc in court in Los Angeles on Friday (22OCT04) when he showed up unannounced to contest a breach of contract lawsuit, brought against him by a South American promoter.

The Downtown courthouse came to a standstill as Stewart, dressed in a smart black suit, arrived to sit through a jury selection he was not expected to show up for.

Stewart is charged with backing out of a South American tour and keeping the $780,000 (GBP433,300) advance. Stewart, in turn, claims the promoters breached the contract.

Stewart sat silently as prosecuting attorney DENNIS HOLOHAN quizzed prospective jurors about any concerns they had about being fair during the upcoming trial.

One male admitted he was a fan of Stewart's music, but insisted he could still be fair in the case, even though the rocker once played soccer with his son.

Opening arguments in the case will commence today (28OCT04).
