Batman (1989) Review

Excellent
Batman has changed over the years. He's gone from Holy Rusted Metal to hallucinogens, from campy to comedy and then back to campy. He's been through more first ladies than half of its leading men, and has seen more directors than an ingénue.

First up to bat in the Batman movies was Tim Burton, fresh off of Beetlejuice and right before Edward Scisscorhands. Burton's Gotham is a noirish nightmare that grabs you from the opening scene. Batman is still a spook story to criminals, but he's a rumor spreading like wildfire. Bumbling on the trail is jackass journalist Alexander Knox (Robert Wuhl), and the girl drawn to the mystery of the bat is Vicky Vale (Kim Basinger).

Good Morning, Vietnam Review

Excellent
Think back to middle school for a moment. Who was the class clown? What was he like?

If your eighth-grade classroom was like most, your class clown was a guarded, smallish boy who was utterly terrified of being himself for even a moment, for fear of suffering the ridicule of others. So he made cracks all day long, and if your classmates laughed every one in a while, you may have eventually seen this kid in adulthood spitting jokes professionally in the vicinity of a brick wall.

Bull Durham Review

Excellent
The first thing you notice in watching Bull Durham 14 years later (now that it has reappeared on a Special Edition DVD) is how incredibly young the players are. Costner's hairline is way up front, Sarandon is a little less wrinkled, and little Tim Robbins looks like he could be in high school.

The story, however, still feels ahead of its time, with Sarandon's femme fatale narrating a tale of how she adopts one player at her local Durham Bulls minor league baseball franchise every year -- providing him with countless years of expertise about the game and essentially screwing him silly along the way. This season, it's "Nuke" LaLoosh (Robbins), a wild pitcher who could use same taming. Also on the case is catcher "Crash" Davis (Costner), whose life lessons also help him out on the field.
