Rima Fakih, the Arab-American model and former Miss Usa, has narrowly avoided prison during sentencing for her drunken driving case. Judge William MCConico put Fakih on six months of probation, while also ordering the former beauty queen to perform 20 hours of community service and pay $600 in fines and costs, reports the Associated Press.
The 26-year-old pleaded no contest last month to driving while visibly impaired in Highland Park, Detroit. She faced a maximum of 93 days in prison, but spoke of her relief at the judge's ruling, saying, "I'm very relieved not to have been sentenced to serve jail time. But let's say it got to that point. I was willing to pay the price it took because I knew I made mistakes". The model said she wasn't drinking on the night of her arrest, though two police breath tests put her blood alcohol level at more than twice the legal limit. Asked about her denial on Wednesday (May 9, 2012), Rima's lawyer W. Otis Culpepper said he didn't think it was "fair to revisit what went on that night". Police said the model was driving at 60mph in a 30mph zone and was weaving in and out of traffic. Officers also found an open bottle of champagne behind the driver's seat of the 2011 Jaguar.
With the court-case behind her, Rima says she plans to appear in a new celebrity dating show called 'The Choice', which premieres June 7, 2012 on Fox.
