Rihanna certainly raised a few eyebrows on Sunday (August 19, 2012), telling Oprah Winfrey that she and Chris Brown still love each other, despite everything that has happened. Of course, Rihanna and Chris Brown's relationship came to an abrupt and rather violent end after he assaulted her before the Grammy Awards in 2009.
Speaking on Oprah's Next Chapter show, Rihanna described the assault as "humiliating" and "hurtful", though refused to publically denounce Brown. He pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge and was sentenced to community service, five years' probation and domestic violence counselling - some thought he got off lightly. Rhi-Rhi explained, "Everything I knew switched in a night and I couldn't control that.[but] As angry as I was, as angry, hurt and betrayed I just felt like he made that mistake because he needed help. Everybody's gonna say he's a monster without looking at the source. Who's gonna help him?". It's now public knowledge that the pair have reunited as friends in recent months (after the restraining order was dropped) and even collaborated together in the studio. Rihanna explained, "We've been working on our friendship again. Now we are very very close friends, we built a trust again. We love each other and we probably always will and that is not anything that we are going to try to change. That is not something you can shut off if you are ever in love".
It's unlikely that Rihanna's career will falter over her decision to forgive Brown, especially considering his own following quickly re-established itself last year. He even scooped his first Grammy Award.
