The wisecracking animals of 'Madagascar 3' got their claws into the competition at the box-office this weekend, with Ridley Scott's hugely anticipated sci-fi flick 'Prometheus' the main casualty.

In a busy weekend in theaters, 'Madagascar 3' pulled away with takings of $60 million, leaving the star-studded 'Prometheus' languishing behind with $50 million. Paul Dergarabedian,'s box-office analyst, spoke enthusiastically of the competitive weekend, saying, "This was a huge weekend for the movie industry.. the animated Madagascar and the R-rated Prometheus leading the way, there was literally something for every age group at the theaters. And audiences responded". Elsewhere, last week's No.1 'Snow White and the Huntsman', starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, performed admirably and took third place with $23 million, while 'Men in Black 3', took fourth place with $13.5 million. Remarkably, 'The Avengers' movie cemented its status as the most successful superhero movie of all time, by earning a further $10.8 million. Closing out the Top 10 were films including Wes Anderson 's 'Moonrise Kingdom' and 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel', starring Dame Judi Dench.

Despite its success, 'Madagascar 3' will struggle to retain the No.1 spot this coming weekend, with the comedy-musical 'Rock of Ages' starring Tom Cruise and Russell Brand opening nationwide.
