The Office star fears many pets are dumped after the holidays, so he is asking fellow animal lovers to go to their nearest rescue centre and give a good home to a creature in need.

"With so many pets abandoned at this time of year, please visit your local rescue shelter & help save a life," he writes in a post on

Ricky added a picture of himself cuddling a dog and he also shared details for PupAid, a campaign group calling for the end of puppy farming in the U.K.

"Massive thanks AGAIN @rickygervais fighting animal cruelty & helping rescue pets find loving forever homes... #adopt," adds a message posted on the Pupaid account.

Previously over the holidays, Ricky asked his Twitter followers to help pick a name for his niece's new puppy, and he revealed the little dog had been called Oscar following suggestions from fans.
