British comedian Ricky Gervais has scooped two awards at the BAFTA TV awards - the UK's version of the EMMYS.

The Office creator and star picked up prizes for Best Comedy Performance and Best Situation Comedy for 2003s THE OFFICE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL.

His name was only added to the awards shortlist at the last minute after the BBC forgot to put him forward for nomination.

Gervais, who has become a hit in America after successfully exporting the comedy show across the Atlantic, said after last night's (18APR04) ceremony in London, "I'm delighted with two Baftas. I'd like to thank the BBC for getting round to nominating me."

LOVE ACTUALLY star Bill Nighy was named Best Actor for his role in BBC1 drama STATE OF PLAY and Julie Walters won the Best Actress award for her role in a modern adaptation of GEOFFREY CHAUCER's CANTERBURY TALE THE WIFE OF BATH.
