After last year's controversial performance, many were keen to see how Ricky Gervais would approach this year's Golden Globes. And of course, who he would choose to poke fun at. In his opening monologue, he joked about a number of big-name stars, including Helen Mirren, Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian. He also managed to make fun of the ceremony itself, pointing out its inferior status to The Oscars. Overall, though, his jokes seemed to lack the vicious edge that his speeches had in 2011. No doubt many celebrities in the room felt that they had got off lightly.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, when introducing the ceremonies, he described the Golden Globes as "just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem." He went on to add "The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what KIM KARDASHAN is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker, and more easily bought. Allegedly. Nothing's been proved." His comments about the teenage pop star Justin Bieber were a little more cutting, though. When discussing Bieber's recent fatherhood scandal, Gervais' commented "What a waste of a (paternity) test that would have been. No, he's not the father. The only way he could have impregnated the girl was if he borrow one of Martha Stewart's old turkey basters."

A review from The Telegraph today describes Gervais' performance as 'sober', whilst a report from the Associated Press opted for the headline 'a tamer Gervais leads predictable Golden Globes.
