British comedian Ricky Gervais has been added to the list of contenders up for the BAFTA annual Best Comedy performer award - after accidentally being missed off by TV network the BBC.

The creator and star of GOLDEN GLOBE-winning series The Office was stunned when he discovered bosses at the British network had forgotten to add his name to their list of nominees.

But after BAFTA investigated the omission and judged it to be a "genuine mistake", they decided to include him on the list of 16 performers in contention for the gong.

Gervais says, "It's very nice, it's very flattering, but I wasn't going to cause a fuss.

"I'm not in it for prizes. I go along to these awards because it's a slap in the face if you don't. The work is so much more important than accolades."

The top four names will be announced in March (04), and the final winner will be announced at the 18 April (04) ceremony.
